Storm in a tea cup: Sculpture by Dennis Oppenheim at Coll de la Botella

Sculpture Storm in a teacup surrounded by lilac flowers in Coll de la Botella

Storm in a teacup It is a monumental sculpture by the American artist Dennis Oppenheim, inaugurated in 1991 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Andorran Social Security Fund (CASS).

Located in Coll de la Botella, parish of La Massana , this piece has been fully integrated into the Andorran landscape, being one of the references of contemporary art in the open air in the country and one of the panoramic points that we recommend from GUIAND® to enjoy a free walk in the mountains.

The sculpture, which stands 13 metres high, plays with the idea of the perception of problems. Using the image of a teacup with a storm brewing inside, Oppenheim proposes a reflection on how something that may seem disproportionate in close-up is reduced when observed in a larger context. This symbolism invites us to rethink our view of problems and the relative scale on which we experience them.

Technical details and materials of the sculpture

The work is composed primarily of stainless steel, a material that stands out for its strength and ability to reflect the natural environment. The cup, whose shape is an artistic interpretation of reality, contrasts with the lines that simulate natural forces, creating a dynamic interaction between the rigid and the fluid.

The use of metallic materials in Storm in a Teacup not only reinforces its monumentality, but also allows it to withstand the elements, adapting to the climatic conditions of the place.

A work in a changing landscape: views and seasons

The sculpture's surroundings are also fundamental to its appreciation. Located in Coll de la Botella, the surrounding landscape changes radically depending on the season.

In winter, the nearby mountains are covered in snow, transforming the landscape into a white and tranquil sight, which brings a sense of calm in front of the power of the sculpture. However, in the warmer months, the greenery of the forests and valleys gives it a completely different feel, where the sculpture integrates into a more vibrant and lively environment that you can also enjoy with your pets if the weather permits.

In addition, from this point you can see the ski slopes of Pal, where if you are lucky, you can witness the flight of majestic bearded vultures.

Whether surrounded by snow or green nature, GUIAND® encourages you to visit this sculpture surrounded by an impressive environment and fresh air in the heart of the Andorran mountains.
